Cheap Flights to the French Alps
Cheap Flights to French Ski and Snowboard Resorts in the Haut Savoie region of the Rhone Alps, France.
Skiers flying to the French Alpine winter sport resorts of the Grand Massif (which includes Flaine, Les Carroz, Morrillon, Samoens), Chamonix. Megeve, La Clusaz, Grand Bornand and Portes de Soleil (includes Avoriaz, Chatel) mostly use Geneva airport but Annecy and Chambéry are also within a short drive (70 minutes) and often have cheap flights.
Low-cost airlines such as Easyjet and BMI have brought the French Alps within reach of budget travelers flying from the United Kingdom.
There are a large number of airlines that fly to Geneva; I've listed the ones I know of, with links to their web sites: Easyjet, BMI baby which has at least 4 regional departure airports, FlyBe which has at least 8 regional departure airports, Jet2, British Airways, KLM, Air France and Swiss Air.
If flying to the alps note that some airlines charge for ski carriage, at the time of writing in 2008 Easyjet charge £33, while Ryanair charge £50. Note BA and Swiss air currently do NOT charge for ski carriage. Many low cost airlines have also started charging for stowed baggage and is likely to catch on with most airlines as a way of saving on baggage handling costs, plus transferring that cost to the traveler.
Getting from the airport to the Grand Massif can be by rental car, alpbus or private taxi. Geneva has the usual range of rental car companies of National, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Alamo and Sixt. The aeroski bus runs in the winter to most of the major ski resorts and can be picked up at the airport, a round trip to Les Carroz was 59E in 2008. A link to the timetable is available at Ucanrent.
Private taxis also run from Geneva airport, a number of our guests have used Ski Lifts which come recommended.
In the winter a number of airlines start flying to Chambery ( Aéroport de Chambéry-Savoie is around 10 km to the north of Chambéry) increasing the availability of cheap tickets;
the trip by road takes about 70 minutes on the A41 and A40 to Les Carroz.
British low-cost airlines have the most flights to Chambéry Airport with Flybe, Jet2, and snowjet; who have been increasing their regional coverage for 2008-2009.
Other useful information on airline arrivals and departures and transport connections can be found on the Geneva Airport site.
